Originally
part of St. Charles Parish in Bridgeport, the people of Nichols petitioned
Bishop Lawrence J. Sheehan for their own parish. In 1955, the parish
was established and Father Edward Halloran was named the first pastor.
Initially, Sunday Masses were celebrated in Hooker School in Bridgeport
and later at Nichols School. Ground was broken for our Church in August
1957 and dedicated a little over a year later on September 21st, 1958.
Recognizing
the importance of teaching our children their Catholic faith, the
parish had by 1964 grown to the stage where a
school
could be considered. Father Halloran was very fortunate to obtain
a commitment from the School Sisters of Notre Dame, who serve the
school to this day. Construction began simultaneously on a school
building and a rectory for our priests. Great strides were made in
1965. Three classes were started in the Church Hall in September with
seventy-one students enrolled in grades 1, 2 & 7. The school grew
steadily with two additional classes added in 1966, and two more in
1967 until the school reached its full capacity of eight grades and
250 students in 1968.
During the next twenty years, less dramatic, but
very important projects were completed. A side parking lot was built,
the school enlarged, the Church air-conditioned, and the mortgage
on the church and school eliminated.
In
the 1990's, we continued to meet the needs of the parish: a new roof
was placed on the Church, as well as new exterior doors, our beautiful
stained glass windows restored, the Church basement upgraded, the
school building was completely refurbished and a Pre-K classroom was
added. In 1996, a major undertaking was the renovation of our worship
space. And, just last year, the
Halloran
Pastoral Center, was completed to provide our dedicated staff
with desperately needed office space and storage for parish records.
Today we have over 1100 families in our parish
community and the parish continues striving to serve the religious,
spiritual and social needs of its parishioners.
